MASH-UPS AND ALTERNATIVE HISTORIES

The settings described here are just a few of the options available. You may have come across Steampunk, for example, a kind of extension of the engineering of the Victorian era which assumes modern or quasi-modern technology based on clockwork and steam. It is a combination of historical and fantasy settings with a dash of steam-powered science fiction, and it is a prime example of what can be called a ‘mash-up’, and depending on the details could also be an example of an alternative history.

A mash-up is what is sounds like; a squashed-together combination, a fusion of disparate elements. The term can be applied to anything, but in terms of setting, how about an historical drama with added zombies? If you think an element commonly found in one setting would work well in another setting, why not try it? It might not work, but it would be interesting to find out!

Alternative histories, or alternative Earths, are settings very similar to this world but with just a few changes. For example, what would life be like today if the Roman Empire had never fallen? Or if magic really existed but was kept hidden by obscure sects or obsessive Government agents? The real world can be a hotbed of fantastical ideas just one small concept away.

These names, of course, are just labels applied in an attempt to classify bits of a story, and they really describe the endpoints of a spectrum rather than distinct subclasses. Don’t be bound by them, but use them as a springboard to inspire your own world.
